Candle Care

A few simple steps will help you care for your candle and burn it safely.

Before lighting

Place your candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface. Keep it away from drafts, vents, open windows, anything flammable, and out of reach of children and pets. Remove any wick trimmings, matches, or other debris from the wax.

Before relighting, let the candle cool completely and gently remove loose char from the wooden wick. Follow the trimming instructions on the label; do not cut the wick below the wax. If the flame becomes unusually tall or smoky, extinguish it and let the candle cool before checking and trimming the wick.

The first burn

Let the wax melt evenly across the surface, within the burn time stated on the candle label. Do not extend a burn just to melt the wax at the edges, and never exceed four hours. Fragrance, candle size, and room conditions can all affect how quickly the wax melts.

During every burn

Keep the candle in sight and never leave it unattended. Do not touch or move the vessel while the candle is lit or the wax is liquid. Follow any shorter burn limit on the label and never burn for more than four hours at a time. Extinguish the candle if the flame becomes unstable or the vessel appears excessively hot.

Extinguishing and relighting

Extinguish the flame gently; never use water. Let the candle cool and the wax become solid before touching the wick, moving the vessel, or relighting. Keep the wax surface free of debris between burns.

When to stop

Stop using the candle when 1/4 inch of wax remains, or sooner if the label instructs. Burning below this level can overheat the vessel and the surface beneath it. Never burn a candle in a chipped, cracked, or damaged container.

Always read the candle's safety label. Follow its instructions alongside this general guidance, using the shorter burn time or earlier stopping point if they differ.
