No. 04 — Clary Sage, Citrus & Woods
Fresh citrus, aromatic sage, and warm woods: a closer look at the notes behind No. 04, and how it compares with our other fragrances.
In No. 04, fresh herbs meet a warm, woody foundation. The individual notes reveal more than a broad fragrance family could.
In our No. 04 candle, bergamot and grapefruit lead into clary sage, rosemary, and coriander seed. Rosewood, guaiacwood, and juniper berries give the composition its woody foundation. Taken together, these notes place it between a bright aromatic fragrance and a warmer, wood-led one.
What does sage smell like in fragrance?
Think beyond the dried herb in a kitchen cupboard. Sage can have green, earthy, and aromatic qualities, but its character changes depending on the variety and what surrounds it.
Our fragrance lists clary sage, commonly described as herbaceous and softly earthy. Alongside rosemary and coriander seed, it gives the heart of the fragrance an aromatic direction. Those herb notes distinguish it from a candle that is woody from beginning to end.
The wood beneath the herbs
Rosewood and guaiacwood bring the fragrance into a warmer, woody register, with juniper berries contributing another aromatic detail. The effect is quite different from a candle built entirely around fresh herbs.
These are the listed notes in No. 04, rather than a promise of freshly cut timber or smoke. The balance of citrus, herbs, and woods is what gives the fragrance its character.
Why bergamot and grapefruit matter
Without its opening notes, No. 04 might seem like an entirely deep, quiet fragrance. Bergamot and grapefruit bring a brighter contrast.
That contrast is what makes the composition interesting to consider: fresh citrus at the beginning, aromatic herbs through the middle, and wood underneath. It gives someone who likes fresh fragrances a way into a woody profile without leaving the freshness behind.
How it compares with our other fragrances
For an herbal comparison, start with No. 02. Its notes include eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, and coriander, placing greater emphasis on a fresh aromatic character.
If the woods are what appeal to you, No. 05 takes a softer, more floral direction. Rose and orange sit above amber, vanilla flower, sandalwood, and cedar. No. 01 offers warmth through vanilla, musk, and wood, without the citrus-and-herb structure of No. 04.
There is no need to treat one of these as universally more subtle or more powerful. The fragrance descriptions tell you about their character; the impression in a room also depends on the individual candle and surroundings.
Choosing No. 04
Consider it if you already enjoy rosemary, sage, bergamot, or woody perfumes. It may also be a good comparison fragrance if you usually choose something fresh but want to explore woods.
Our guide to all seven fragrances puts those choices side by side. If you would rather compare them at home, the Discovery Collection lets you select three different 3 oz Mini candles, subject to availability.
The written notes are a beginning; spending time with the fragrance is how you learn whether it belongs in your home.
