No. 01 — Amber, Vanilla & Woods
Warmth, soft sweetness, and woods: a closer look at amber fragrance and the vanilla, musk, and wood notes of No. 01.
Amber usually describes a warm, softly sweet fragrance, often with resinous or woody depth. In a candle, the notes around it determine whether that warmth feels rich and spicy, soft and musky, or closer to vanilla.
Our No. 01 candle pairs warm amber with vanilla, musk, and wood. It has a soft, rounded character, with warmth at the center of the composition.
What amber describes
In fragrance, amber commonly refers to an accord: several materials brought together to create a particular scent impression. Traditional amber accords often draw on labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla. The word describes a fragrance character rather than a single, universal ingredient.
That leaves room for interpretation. Two amber-led candles can have quite different profiles, so it is worth reading the accompanying notes. They tell you more than the name on its own.
Vanilla, musk, and wood
For Highland & Hive, those accompanying notes are vanilla, musk, and wood. Vanilla brings a familiar sweet association; musk suggests softness; wood gives the description a warmer, grounded direction.
Read them together. A vanilla note does not, by itself, mean a candle will smell like baking. Nor does a wood note necessarily suggest smoke. No. 01 is described by the combination: warm amber, softened by vanilla and musk, with wood beneath it.
Is amber a sweet fragrance?
It can be. Sweetness is often part of an amber profile, but the amount and character vary with the composition. Someone who likes vanilla may find amber a useful direction to explore, especially when woods are among the other notes.
If you usually prefer citrus or fresh herbs, compare No. 01 with No. 03 or No. 02. Those descriptions give you a clearer contrast than comparing names alone.
Warmth across our collection
No. 05 also includes an amber note, alongside orange, rose, vanilla flower, sandalwood, and cedar. It is the comparison to make if you enjoy warmth with a floral character.
No. 04 approaches woods through bergamot, grapefruit, and aromatic herbs. Choose it as a point of comparison if the wood in No. 01 interests you, but you would also like citrus and herbal notes.
No. 07 takes another route, combining warm fruit, soft florals, and citrus zest. It may appeal if you are deciding between a fruit-led fragrance and the musk-and-wood character of No. 01.
Experience it at home
A description can help you narrow a choice. Living with a fragrance is how you learn whether you want to return to it. The Discovery Collection lets you choose three different 3 oz Minis to experience separately in your own space.
